Now that I can safely say that I have added exercise to my weight loss campaign (after having gone 30 minutes a day on the elliptical for 3 out of 4, and two consecutive), I started looking into it a little more. I wanted to make sure that I am getting the most out of my 30 minutes. I think that all of my overweight readers will agree with me when I say that one of the big problems with starting to exercise is the lack of immediate reward. We train so hard during our cardio program that when we go to the scale immediately after, we don't see the 5 pounds being shed that we feel we so rightly deserve. I have the same gut looking at me when I towel off, the same floppy chest when I soap up in the shower, the same everything.

Out of all the articles or sites on weight loss, here are the two that I thought were the most realistic, and seemed to quote the most respectable sources. The first one was an article on CNN.com, http://www.cnn.com/2003/HEALTH/diet.fitness/05/27/exercise.time/index.html. The second one was on that about.com sites that seems to pop up every time you do a search on something found http://walking.about.com/od/fitness/a/besttimeex.htm.

The jist of both of those articles is that while they may be benefits to doing your cardio in the hours surrounding your body's optimum temperature time (6pm), for the most part, those benefits appear to be negligible. The most important part seems to be doing your cardio in a non-polluted environment, with plenty of warm-up exercises beforehand and making sure you are in a constant state of visibility so as to avoid injury. For those of you that are night owls, if you have to go out and power walk, make sure to get light reflective gear on so that you can be seen. All in all, the best time to train is when you have 30-90 minutes of un-interruptable time to yourself.

I am working from home a lot these days, so for me, I can easily work through my lunch (a chance to read through PowerPoint's and documents while I eat my lunch) so that I can take a good 45 minute break in the afternoon for my elliptical machine. For days when I do go in, I figure I will just do it when I get back, after dinner, since I am not much of a morning person, and usually go in to work ridiculously early anyway. The only issue with exercising later at night is that you want to allow a good 2 hours from when you finish your work out until when you go to bed. You need to allow your body to cool back down, and your heart rate to go back to normal levels before you try to go to sleep.

Getting healthy is truly life changing. You have to be committed to it 24/7, but not because you HAVE to, but because you WANT to. I look at my schedule on a weekly and daily basis to make sure I have a spot each day that I can exercise. I have to have a commitment from my wife that we can make arrangements that will allow me to continue exercising, and add some variety. I just can't do the elliptical everyday for the next few months. My new date to start my martial arts work out is next week Tuesday, but I am talking to my wife about taking Tai Chi on Saturday mornings. I like variety and this will help add a little more spice to my workouts.
